San Antonio Philharmonic Announces Music Director

We are thrilled to announce the appointment of world-renowned conductor, pianist, and educator, Jeffrey Kahane, as Music Director of the San Antonio Philharmonic. Jeffrey Kahane will join us beginning in the 2024-25 season.

As we prepare to embark on the San Antonio Philharmonic’s third season, continuing an 85-year legacy of musical excellence, Jeffrey Kahane’s appointment will further propel the orchestra and organization in our pursuit to expand our audiences, increase community engagement, and provide world-class performances.

In a career spanning five decades, Jeffrey Kahane has excelled in a multitude of roles – from performing as a soloist in concertos with renowned orchestras around the world, to numerous recital tours with Yo-Yo Ma, to leading the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra on European tours during his 20-year tenure as Music Director. He has been instrumental in commissioning and premiering dozens of new works, bringing a sense of moral and ethical purpose to all he takes on. Kahane has also had a decades-long history with the San Antonio Symphony, having maintained close ties to the musicians since his conducting debut in the 1992-93 season. Most recently, at our 2023/24 opening concert, Jeffrey Kahane was the San Antonio Philharmonic guest conductor for Classics 1.

An Exciting Season Ahead

The 2024-25 season, curated by Kahane, will feature recent works by Gabriela Ortiz, Jerod Tate, Nkeiru Okoye, Jeff Scott, Peter Shin, Gabriela Lena Frank, Sarah Kirkland Snider, Sofia Gubaidulina, and more. The season’s programs will also continue to showcase masterpieces from the classical canon, including familiar masterworks such as Tchaikovsky’s “Pathétique” Symphony, Saint-Saëns’ “Organ” Symphony and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10, as well as major works such as Elgar’s Symphony No. 1 and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 1.

SAN ANTONIO PHILHARMONIC NAMES ROBERTO TREVIÑO AS ITS FIRST-EVER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

The board of directors of the San Antonio Philharmonic has taken the landmark step of naming an executive director. Its choice, Roberto Treviño, is an architect in private practice and former three-term District 1 City Council member. He served on the Philharmonic board during its inaugural season.

“We are excited to name Roberto Treviño as our first executive director,” said Philharmonic board chair Brian Petkovich. “His passion, dedication, and wealth of knowledge about the arts, the orchestra and the city make him the right person to build on our success.

“Roberto served on the City-County Symphony Transformation Task Force when in office as the District 1 Councilperson and has been an active member of the board of directors over the past year. We welcome him to this new role and look forward to his leadership.”

During his tenure as a council member representing the city’s urban core, Treviño was known for his commitment to creative problem solving and his unwavering support for the arts. As chair of the Arts and Culture Committee, he led the development and implementation of numerous initiatives and policies aimed at enhancing the quality of life for the city, with a particular emphasis on promoting dignity and compassion in the community.

The San Antonio Philharmonic brings world class performances to the San Antonio community through its classics seasons and imaginative community engagement. Its Young People’s Concerts brought music programs and curriculum to more than 27,000 students in the inaugural season.
